It is a fairily typical portuguese municipal flag,
with the coat of arms centered on a white
and blue quarterly (town rank) background.

The arms are Gules between two oxen heads Or armed Argent in chief and a
fess wavy Azure fimbriated potenty Argent a castle Argent masoned and open and
litten Or with balcony turrets on its main tower. Mural crown argent with four
visible towers (town rank) and white scroll
reading in black upper case letters "Vila de Montalegre".

variations: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

Montalegre municipality had 1273 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 35
communes covering 806,19 km². It is part of Vila
Real District, traditional province and 1999 ref. adm. region
Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, C.C.R. / NUTS II Norte,
and NUTS III Alto Trás-os-Montes. The arms include a reference to the local
meat oxen variety barrosã and to the local castle; Montalegre
lies in the border line with Spain, locally formed by a small river.
