The arms are derived from the arms of the Abella family, who used three bees in a red field. The bee itself is canting (abella in Catalan). Abella de la Conca was founded by Ramón Abella, a knight of King James I, around the year 1000 or 1100 during the Reconquista.

A yellow flag with five thin black horizontal stripes in the central horizontal third of the flag. Colours from the arms, which show a gold bee (Catalan abella) on a black field, as it appears in the city webpage.

The Latin root is "apicula", which gave in French "abeille". "apicula" gave "apiculture" and "apiculturist", and the bee is called in zoological Latin "Apis mellifica", "apicula" being therefore a small "apis."

The black and yellow stripes are based on the colors of the Abella family coat of arms, the city was once a Barony. As the town grew, they used the baron's coat of arms.
